What to Expect From a Remedial Massage
Your Initial Consultation and Assessment
Remedial massage is an effective treatment for all sorts of cycling and sports injuries, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. A proper remedial massage treatment should always include an initial consultation and assessment. This is your chance to talk to your massage therapist about any injuries or concerns you want to address. The initial consultation will also include other things, like taking measurements of your body, assessing posture, and performing strength or flexibility tests. All of these things will help your therapist figure out what’s causing your discomfort and design a treatment plan to suit. For remedial massage therapy to be effective, the initial consult and assessment can’t be skipped.
Developing a Treatment Plan
No two people are the same. Your condition and any injuries are unique, which means your remedial massage treatment needs to be the same. Before treatment begins, your therapist will use the information they gathered from your consultation to design a customised treatment plan. At this point you’ll be told about the therapist’s findings and how they plan to approach your treatment. In some cases your treatment plan could include multiple massage sessions, as well as stretches and exercises you can perform on your own to improve results and alleviate pain or stiffness. For an intervention to be effective, it’s important to follow your therapist’s recommendations, especially if they ask you to do exercises.
Receiving Your Massage
Each patient needs something a little different, so no two massages are the same. The muscles we work and the techniques we use are based on our initial assessment and any specific injuries or pains that need to be addressed. Patients need to be completely comfortable during their massage, and your therapist will provide sheets or towels that can be draped for modesty and warmth. While lots of patients simply leave their underwear on and use towels for modesty, this isn’t a requirement, and you can always speak to your massage therapist about leaving other pieces of clothing on if you would feel more comfortable.
Throughout your massage, your therapist will use techniques like deep-tissue massage, cupping, joint mobilisation and assisted stretching to target your areas of concern. In some cases a remedial massage will include work directly on your injuries. In other cases, your therapist might find it more effective to work on the surrounding areas instead.

Welcome Daniel Perkins
We’ve been so busy of late that it’s taken another Covid19 lockdown to give us the opportunity to introduce our latest high calibre staff member. In April this year we welcomed Daniel Perkins to the team to add to our growing Podiatry practitioner base.
Daniel grew up in North Brisbane and went to Albany Creek State High before studying Exercise Science at ACU, then on to Podiatry at QUT.
After graduating in 2018, Dan moved north to the Fraser Coast for work. A keen BMX rider in his youth, Dan has relished the challenge of working in the sports and cycling setting at The Pedaler.
Dan works out of our Milton headquarters as well as our Nundah and Eatons Hill co-locations. Dan has also become and integral part of the COBRA9 Cycling Orthotics team working as our liaison with practitioners all around Australia and overseas.
Dan arrived just in time to form part of our inaugural Pedaler Golf Team in the now annual Pedaler vs NorthWest Cup. The squad went down narrowly by 0.5 of a stroke despite the brave efforts of Barista Jacob. Dan has promised to spend at least 10 hours per week at the range to atone for his misdeeds in the 2021 event. With fellow Podiatrist Lincoln as his playing parter, he will need all the help he can get!
COBRA9 RACING RIDES AGAIN!!
This weekend sees the return of Queensland Road Team Series (QRTS) for season 2021. After last years event fell victim to COVID19, it’s great to see the popular South East Queensland series back on in earnest.
As has been the case since 2014, The Pedaler along with our cycling orthotic company COBRA9 Cycling Orthotics will again be fielding teams. We return with a masters and elite team for the 2021 event. Our elite squad has a similar feel to the 2018 Pedaler Hit Squad who won it all with the enigmatic Mitch Neumann also taking individual honours.
Round 1 is at Elimbah with the fabled Campbells Pocket climb on the cards for Sundays road race. The Saturday features a Prologue then a painful Team Trial to follow.
Big thanks to our long term sponsors who keep providing us with the important support to keep running the team.

NO GAP ORTHOTICS FOR EXISTING PATIENTS. DON'T MISS OUT!
It's that time of the year again!
For most health insurers, December 31st marks the point where your benefits reset. It means, if you want a 2nd set of orthotics to use in your cycling or walking shoes, now is the time to use your benefits prior to the reset period.
All our valued clients at The Pedaler are entitled to 2nd set of orthotics with no 'out of pocket' costs with the use of their Private Health Fund*. If you haven't seen our podiatrist and need to upgrade your orthotics, now is a good time to get the process started prior to the end of the year to ensure you can make use of this unique benefit next year as well. This offer is valid across all our locations including Pedaler Podiatry at North West Physiotherapy locations.
Make sure you book a time soon, or give us a call to avoid missing the December 31st deadline as we get quite busy in November and December.
We are fortunate to be one of the few remaining Podiatry Practices that still has its own lab. This allows us to create unique solutions for all your shoe and foot issues.
If you’ve been putting off seeing a Podiatrist to organise orthotics to alleviate pain, improve comfort or prevent potential problems, then get in now and we can prescribe your custom set of orthotics now, then issue you with a 2nd set in the new year at NO GAP.

New Physio! More Hours Available!
Please join us in welcoming Ron to the The Pedaler team!
Ron joins us thanks to our ongoing relationship with North West Physiotherapy, and is looking forward to working alongside Anouska and all our other Health Practitioners. Ron brings a wealth of Physiotherapy knowledge and experience behind him, along with a very strong background in exercise rehabilitation.
Born and bred in Brisbane, Ron has been involved with Exercise and Sport since he can remember. Whether it’s sprinting down the 100m track at QE2, kicking the ball in the First XI at Nudgee College, Powerlifting at the Gym or, most recently, jumping on his road bike on the Peninsula - Ron is enthusiastic and passionate about heath and fitness.
Ron decided to combine this passion with his professional career, completing a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from the Australian Catholic University in 2016. He immediately joined the team at North West Physiotherapy Everton Park where he has helped thousands of clients eliminate their pain and return them back to what they love.
What makes Ron so popular amongst his clients is the importance he places on understanding the client in-front of him. This genuine care for his clients’ wellbeing is represented in his ability to select the most appropriate assessment and treatment modalities for each individual.
Throughout his time as a Physiotherapist, Ron has gained valuable experience through work with Mitchelton FC, Souths United FC, Norths Rugby and Wizards Basketball. Additionally, Ron was a Physiotherapist at the XXI Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, looking after Shooting and Track Cycling athletes. He also provides niche Gym-focused Physiotherapy and Personal Training services at a nearby World Gym.
Ron also continues to develop his knowledge within Physiotherapy, having completing further qualifications in Western Acupuncture/Dry Needling, Shoulder Rehabilitation and MAT Assessment. Furthermore Ron is an Accredited Powerlifting Australia Powerlifting Coach, and Australian Strength & Conditioning Association Strength & Conditioning Coach
Ron will be available for consultations at The Pedaler Milton 2pm-6pm Mondays and Fridays.
We are back! New Cafe location at Nundah, and health services to all our locations.
In the midst of COVID19 business interruptions, March and April proved to be difficult months to run a health focused business. Treading the delicate line between advising patients to stay away verses the need to run a smooth consistent business is a unique challenge. Thankfully some normalcy is returning and we are preparing ourselves to ramp up our services.
With restrictions now easing, we are all back on deck looking after the needs of cyclists and athletes from all walks of life. Podiatry is now operational again full time at our central Milton headquarters, alongside our Nundah, Eatons Hill, Keperra and Everton Park locations. Nutrition, massage and bike fitting have also returned. The workshop has been quite busy throughout the lockdown, however, we remain confident we can turn over most repairs within 24 hours. Please call for bookings or book online as spots fill very quickly.
We now also have our 2nd cafe set up at Nundah Village on Sandgate road to serve the Northside smooth Fonzie Abbott brews. This has been an interesting and mildly stressful experience navigating the perils of lockdown whilst trying to establish a new business. We are very proud of what we have managed to achieve in trying circumstances. The 4012 is open every day of the week including weekends.
We hope to reboot our shop rides and runs very soon alongside government directives. That first Cootha Tuesday will be a hell of a session with a rampant Dave Edwards returning to peak condition whilst locked away from the XXXX ale house. All updates regarding group rides will be across our social media.
A huge thanks to our very supportive community who have lifted and supported us throughout the uncertain past few months. We owe a debt of gratitude to all of you for keeping the lights on whilst many in the business community are doing it very tough.
How can I boost my immune system?
As it's getting into the cooler months (and the current attention to our immune health) Tara Davenport (APD) gives us some simple strategies to ensure we are doing as much as we can from a nutrition stand point to support our immune system.
Challenge yourself to eat 30 different plants throughout the week. This includes plant-based foods like wholegrains (rice/oats/quinoa), tofu, tempeh and of course vegetables and fruits.
Eat the rainbow - when we eat vegetables we are aiming for a range of colour on the plate - this is our multi-vitamin as each colour will represent a different vitamin.
Prebiotics = a food that will help to promote a healthy environment in our gut. The easiest probiotic we can aim for is enough fibre in our diet. The key here is also to consume a variety of fibres (try to complete the first point as well as you can). We typically want to aim for 30-40g of fibre / day (use a food app once to see what this will look like). Prebiotics also include fermented foods such as gherkins, or pickled vegetables.
Probiotics = living cultures or bacteria within food or found in supplement. The foods that provide us with living organisms are yoghurt, kimchi, the probiotic milks, sourkraut, Kefir which directly help populate the colon. Probiotic capsules can be helpful at times of travel, higher training loads or if we are already feeling a little run down. However it is important to note, these capsules are a not a magic wand and we need enough fibre coming to support the process.
If you want to know more about how you can help your gut stay healthy Tara is available for consults in our Milton Location.
