What to Expect From a Remedial Massage

Your Initial Consultation and Assessment

Remedial massage is an effective treatment for all sorts of cycling and sports injuries, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. A proper remedial massage treatment should always include an initial consultation and assessment. This is your chance to talk to your massage therapist about any injuries or concerns you want to address. The initial consultation will also include other things, like taking measurements of your body, assessing posture, and performing strength or flexibility tests. All of these things will help your therapist figure out what’s causing your discomfort and design a treatment plan to suit. For remedial massage therapy to be effective, the initial consult and assessment can’t be skipped.

Developing a Treatment Plan

No two people are the same. Your condition and any injuries are unique, which means your remedial massage treatment needs to be the same. Before treatment begins, your therapist will use the information they gathered from your consultation to design a customised treatment plan. At this point you’ll be told about the therapist’s findings and how they plan to approach your treatment. In some cases your treatment plan could include multiple massage sessions, as well as stretches and exercises you can perform on your own to improve results and alleviate pain or stiffness. For an intervention to be effective, it’s important to follow your therapist’s recommendations, especially if they ask you to do exercises.

Receiving Your Massage

Each patient needs something a little different, so no two massages are the same. The muscles we work and the techniques we use are based on our initial assessment and any specific injuries or pains that need to be addressed. Patients need to be completely comfortable during their massage, and your therapist will provide sheets or towels that can be draped for modesty and warmth. While lots of patients simply leave their underwear on and use towels for modesty, this isn’t a requirement, and you can always speak to your massage therapist about leaving other pieces of clothing on if you would feel more comfortable.

Throughout your massage, your therapist will use techniques like deep-tissue massage, cupping, joint mobilisation and assisted stretching to target your areas of concern. In some cases a remedial massage will include work directly on your injuries. In other cases, your therapist might find it more effective to work on the surrounding areas instead.
